Clouds & Kayaks, Achill Island

THE clouds do strange things on Achill Island.

There’s probably a very simple meteorological explanation. But I’m just happy to appreciate it and photograph the results when the opportunity arises.

As well as being the largest island off the Irish coast, Achill is also the most beautiful.

On a sunny day, it’s simply an exhilarating place to be. You never want to go home. It’s therefore a pleasant surprise to find that it’s still relatively unspoiled by tourism.

As this image suggests, kayaking in Achill is a popular activity. The kayaks make a most delightful foreground while the cloud over Slievemore – the island’s highest point – is positively breathtaking.

Some locals have a theory that hidden deep within the mountain is an ancient wind device that bubbles up air to create strange and magical cloud formations.

I’m not entirely sure I believe them!
