Port, County Donegal

If raw elemental nature is your thing then Port, on the west coast of Donegal, is the place to go.

It may not be the most accessible of locations, but it’s well worth the slow meandering drive through the sort of wild isolated mountain scenery that is the hallmark of this spectacularly beautiful part of Ireland.

Be assured that you won’t break any speed limits here; the only way in is a winding bumpy single-lane road with grass growing up the middle and a lot of sheep with quite limited road skills.

But what a sight greets you when you reach the end! Spectacular sea cliffs and massive rock formations rising majestically out of a treacherously churning sea.

Port is 15 kilometres from the nearest centre of population – the village of Glencolumbkille. Take your time. You’ll have little other choice.
