Let nobody be in any doubt – Keem Beach at the far end of Achill Island is one of the most spectacular coastal locations in all of Ireland.
Many people would say it is THE most spectacular, and indeed beautiful.
New visitors sometimes find the steep and winding narrow road a bit daunting. I have walked it and driven it, though I would probably draw the line at cycling it. Walking is probably best, as it gives you plenty of time to enjoy a panorama of such beauty that the full impact never quite comes across in a mere photograph.
But there’s also the miniature landscape – the tiny vistas that are to be found in the sand and among the rocks.
These images of sand and rock were taken at a time of great personal sorrow and loss. For me, these subtle patterns and shapes – each with their own individual beauty – will always represent a few borrowed moments of solace amid deep sadness.
